Dead squashed tree, chewed then pressed then smeared
With ink in shapes that mean more than they seem
Sold by the dozen from a vendor’s rack
And yet
Inside those flimsy pages lies the Dream.

Such simple stories that they draw down scorn
Unlikely passion plays that all end well
Disposable entertainment for a dime
And yet
Inside these flimsy pages heroes dwell.

A quiet man is much more than he seems
Courageous hearts will conquer and prevail
A villain sows his own destruction’s seeds
And so
The one who stands for right must never fail.

In pictures read by torchlight in the dark
On pages turned by youthful eager hand
Imagination fills between the dots
And then
The lesson’s learned, a hero takes his stand.

Trivial? Real life’s just not that way.
An adult’s lot is disappointing grey.
The world’s a darker place where evil wins.
And yet
Some early lessons just won’t go away.

With power comes responsibility
The weak must be protected by the strong
Ask not a man’s condition, ask his worth
And know
That everyone must stand against what’s wrong.

Unrealistic lands, four-coloured friends
Are far from our degraded world of sin?
Cannot withstand the cold contemptuous now?
And yet
Isn’t that what we must strive to win?

If justice leads to fairness and to peace
If love and faith can conquer vice and guilt
If only in the stories that we tell
Well then
What we imagine also can be built.

A hero starts from dreams we have to build
A better world that treasures things we lack
Forged from the truths our children see so clear;
And so:
We owe a debt to Stan and Steve and Jack.
